Struggle is an essential part of man’s existence and with it comes an outpouring of emotions that underlie masculinity. In this collaborative work, Rastle, aimed to extract the emotions of Alvin, a professional MMA fighter, and the captured emotions depict strong and blurred strokes of bright and dark hues. Hence, this abstract series is called “Daloy” or flow.

The Daloy series was created as part of the BHP Creative Team’s participation for Movember – through an exhibit entitled “Ito ang Lalaki”. Since the campaign focuses on “man”, I decided to collaborate for a more inclusive output.
I asked Alvin to give me a combination of colors for the dominant emotions that he mostly feels – which demands another blog post.
The colors were mixed in an empty cup with a combination of white formulation to make the paint flow freely. The outcome was a surprise after every pour – you cannot control how it will flow, but you can tilt the canvas to cover the white space.

The process, as the title suggests, flowed flawlessly. Color mixing, cleaning, and drying took most of the time, yet letting the paint flow was just quick which demanded a combination of technique, imagination… and hints of neon.

Originally the plan was to place 12 abstracts together, but there were acrylic pours that did not make the cut during curation. These pours were either too thick or too thin – and we learnt that the right mix is needed to make things flow freely.
